About this webinar

Having a useful recommendation does not always mean it receives the attention it deserves. This session will help you understand the people involved in a decision and explain your ideas in a way that makes their relevance and value easier to see.

We’ll look at how to identify what matters to a stakeholder, who influences their thinking and what may be making them hesitant. I’ll introduce David Rock’s SCARF framework as one way to consider the concerns and reactions that can affect a working conversation.

You’ll practise explaining your recommendation, selecting the information that supports it and making clear what you need from the other person. We’ll also consider how to respond to disagreement, ask about concerns and prepare conversations before a formal meeting.

Please have a stakeholder or forthcoming decision in mind. You’ll use that example to draft a short recommendation and a follow-up email you can adapt for work.

What you will learn

· Map the people involved in a decision and identify whose priorities or concerns you need to understand.

· Use SCARF to reflect on possible sources of concern without assuming you know what someone else is thinking.

· Present your recommendation clearly, explaining the benefit, relevant evidence and decision or support you need.

· Prepare for disagreement and draft a four-line follow-up email with a clear next step.

Who this session is for

Specialists who need to gain support for their work, including when they do not have formal authority.

You will leave with a stakeholder map, a more focused recommendation and wording for a follow-up email, all based on a decision or conversation that matters to you.
